The Serra d’Ossa is a picturesque mountain range located in the Alentejo region in southern Portugal, which includes densely forested areas, mainly cork oaks and eucalyptus trees. Serra d’Ossa is only 650 meters above sea level. but thanks to its position and gentle slopes it offers wonderful views of the surrounding Alentejo region. The mountain range is known for its natural beauty, rich history and wildlife. It is located 20 km from the beautiful, historic town of Estremoz – it is worth combining these two places on a trip.
History of Serra d’Ossa
Serra d’Ossa has a long history of settlement dating back to the prehistoric era. Numerous megalithic structures, such as menhirs and dolmens, have been found here, indicating that the site had ritual significance. In the Middle Ages, the mountains were a refuge for hermit monks. In 1182, the monastery of São Paulo da Serra d’Ossa was founded on the slopes of Serra d’Ossa. Today, the monastery houses a 4-star hotel. This place was a spiritual center and became known for the cultivation of medicinal herbs. The mountain range was also important to local communities, who exploited its natural resources such as timber, cork and water.
Curiosities about Serra d’Ossa
When it comes to curiosities related to Serra d’Ossa, according to local legends, the mountains were a place where treasures were hidden and a refuge for robbers. Many folk tales come from here. However, the monks from the São Paulo monastery were known for their knowledge of herbs and their medicinal properties. Some of these traditions have survived to this day.

Walking trail Passadiços da Serra d'Ossa
Today the region is popular with hiking enthusiasts. The trails lead through picturesque hills, forests and viewpoints with a panoramic view of the Alentejo.
I was interested in the hiking trail Passadiços da Serra d’Ossa, which starts in the village of Aldeia da Serra and leads to the chapel of Igreja da Nossa Senhora do Monte da Virgem. The route is well marked and partly leads along wooden sidewalks, including stairs.
Route length: 1.5 km (3 km round trip).
Route type: Linear.
Level of difficulty: Easy, suitable for families and people with average physical condition.
Height difference: About 116 meters.
Attractions on the route:
- Rural gardens and farmland. At the beginning of the route you can admire old gardens and small farmlands that have been cared for by generations of local people. They are surrounded by traditional stone walls, typical of the Alentejo region, which give the landscape a rustic charm.
- Slate rock formations. The route leads through slopes with slate cliffs, which are a geological attraction. The rocks have a variety of colors and textures, creating a unique landscape.
- Mediterranean vegetation. Along the route, you are surrounded by typical vegetation of the region, such as cork oaks, holm oaks and pine trees. In spring, you can admire wildflowers that add color to the landscape.
- Panoramic views of the Serra d’Ossa. In many places the route offers breathtaking panoramic views of the Serra d’Ossa and its surroundings.
- Connection to the PR4 RDD – Ermidas Serra d’Ossa route, a 20 km circular route for more experienced hikers. If you decide to continue along the PR4 RDD trail, you will discover former monasteries and meditation places.
