It was supposed to be a quick trip “abroad”, from Portuguese region of Algarve to the nearest Spanish town to refuel gasoline (cheaper 0.40 € per liter) for a return trip to Lisbon. While the Portuguese border towns Vila Real de Santo António and Castro Marim were pleasing to the eye, Spanish Ayamonte turned out to be a sunny surprise. I regret that I did not take the camera (who takes the camera while driving to the gas station 😜?), Photos from the phone must be enough.
Sunny squares, pubs with local people having tapas and the streets that smell flowers. In May it’s still low season so Spanish instead of English can be heard everywhere. My heart was stolen by colorful azulejos decorating benches in the park, reminding me of Seville. If you are in the eastern part of Algarve jump to Ayamonte, it’s only 5km away from the border. Or maybe you know similar charming places and you want to share the secret?
Where to eat in Ayamonte?
While in Spain, we couldn’t miss the opportunity to try the local cuisine. Bar Guerrero is a great place to try Spanish delicacies. The prices are very affordable. The food was delicious and of great quality. There’s a lot of seafood on the menu.
