Praia da Amoreira, in the western part of Algarve region, is definitely one of the most picturesque beaches in Portugal. Here the Aljezur river meets the ocean and creates a small lagoon, you can swim in the ocean or in the river. Some of the attractions are the view points, trekking and cycling routes, surf, standup paddle, bodyboard. Water is crystal clear and during the season there are lifeguards.
Warning: Please note that there is a convenient access to the beach only on the northern side (next to the Paraiso do Mar restaurant). If you come from the south (next to the Taberna do Gabriel restaurant), you will find a beautiful view point, but the access to the beach is only for the brave: surfers jump here from vertical rocks straight into the ocean.
At the beach Praia da Amoreira you will find surf & paddle schools like Sygma SUP School where you can rent a board (surf, SUP paddle, bodyboard) or book classes with an instructor. I chose the SUP paddle, (I had tried it few times before), and set off with a board and an oar towards the river with crystal clear water. There are no waves on the river, but you have to pay attention to the current, which is rapid in some places. Personally, I prefer SUP paddle to surfing, mainly because I am not that strong in my arms, on SUP I set the rhythm and decide when to row and I am not dependent on the waves, I swim to admire the landscape and thus to relax. But don’t think that SUP is a piece of cake 😉 On the board, every muscle works to keep the balance of the entire body, with an oar in our hands we fight not to fall into the water.
Two restaurants operate by the beach in the summer: Paraiso do Mar and Taberna do Gabriel. In both you can order fresh fish, seafood, and other Portuguese dishes.
The town of Aljezur, 8 kilometers from the beach, is the best location for holiday accommodation. There are several restaurants, cafes, grocery shops, museums and a castle that can be visited. There are also plenty of apartments for rent in the surrounding villages, I recommend Quinta das Águas near Rogil with cosy rustic interiors. We were received by very nice owner and had delicious homemade breakfasts. There is a barbecue area for guests, surrounding is silent and relaxing and starry nights are amazing.
